Holidays > 1996 > June: Scotland with Sean and Jason
I went on a two week holiday in Scotland in early June 1996 with Jason Moffat and Sean Landsman. It was great but we spent too much time driving around. The following is a list of the places we visited in chronological order (An * indicates we stayed at a Youth Hostel):
* Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Berwick-upon-Tweed
Given a £20 fine here, as we did not know it was Pay and Display on the
bridge.
* Edinburgh
Stayed here for two days. Spend most of our time Rollerblading
on the pavements.
Dunfermline
Sterling
* Loch Lomond
Glencoe
Glen Nevis
of Ben Nevis.
Loch Ossian
We only managed to get within six miles, as we didn't know you have to
travel the rest on foot to get to it.
* Loch Lochy
Loch Ness
The Youth Hostel was full when we got there, so we had to wait until
three days later to return to look for Nessie.
* Ratagan
A Youth Hostel on the banks of Loch Duich near the Isle of Skye.
We went hiking/climbing the Five Sisters (a mountain - to clear up any
confusion). The view was most impressive.
Kyleakin
Isle of Skye
Armadale
* Broadford
* Glenbrittle
The Youth Hostel was at the base of a valley and looked like a double
story Log Cabin. A river ran down one side of the valley and had
a series of six waterfalls. This was the best part of the
whole trip and we could have stayed there longer, but had lots more to
see and were running out of time.
Trotternish
* Loch Ness
There were no sightings of the Loch Ness Monster (Nessie), but the Loch
is a fantastic sight.
Inverness
We weren't very impressed with this, but were apparently there at the
wrong time of the year. Inver-, by the way, means River Mouth. So
Inverness is the River Mouth of the Ness, which feeds Loch Ness.
When the River is in full flow, it is really impressive, as it runs through
the centre of the town. The embankment is high enough to prevent
flooding.
Perth
Sterling
* New Lanark
A 200 year old village two miles outside of Lanark, with a river running
alongside, used to drive a Steel Mill.
* Alston
This is not in Scotland, but in the Lake District in North England.
The next time I go to Scotland, I would rather spend a couple of days at fewer
places, but thoroughly enjoyed this 2000 mile trip.
